?Are games the answer to improving cognitive function?

With scientists and researchers continually examining the benefits of video games, the answers to how they help or hinder your brain are becoming clearer.

Some studies suggest that you only improve at the specific game as opposed to the cognitive function that they claim to help you develop. In Lehman?s terms, playing something on a console that requires concentration may improve your ability on the game but not in real life.

Other studies conducted at world-recognised universities, found that playing video games can ?greatly? improve our cognitive functions in many different aspects, becoming more aware and perceptive. This probability leaves us wondering if a game like Far Cry 3 could improve our survival skills outside the virtual world.

These studies suggest that people who played action-based video and computer games made decisions 25% faster than others without giving up accuracy. In addition, skillful game players paid attention to as many as six things at once without any confusion, when we normally keep only four in our minds.

Most games engage the players in a vast variety of cerebral tasks, and playing can enhance any one of them. For instance, some have concluded that fast-paced or action-loaded video games have shown to develop visual acuteness, perception of space, and a facility to spot objects in a scene; while complex, strategy-based gamers get better at other cognitive skills, including reasoning and working memory.

The downside of some of these studies demonstrates that violent video games can also alter brain function in young men after just one week of playing. It registered a depressing activity among areas of the brain linked with emotional control.

It is quite known that our minds need to exercise creative thinking, problem solving, and intellectual focus in order to keep our mental health and capacities improving; but video games are not yet considered to be the best training. Choosing an activity we enjoy, such as: reading, playing Sudoku, playing cards, solving crossword or puzzles might be a better bet to show progress in those particular areas, at a lower cost than video gaming. Subject overindulgence can have various benefits and if you learn a new language or musical instrument this can be a more effective and enjoyable way of help cognitive function.

Nevertheless when playing video games wisely, being conscious of its pros and cons could also work to our advantage and mental growth. Understand it as a new way of entertainment that could include opportunities for enhancing brain function.
