ABC orders drama pilots from Martin Campbell, Maria Maggenti

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Casino Royale" director Martin Campbell is taking on another intrigue-filled project, this time with ABC.

The network has ordered a pilot for the drama "Reckless," which Campbell, left, will executive produce.

The pilot involves David, a resourceful problem-solver whose wife is unjustly imprisoned during a political uprising overseas. Desperately to rescue her, he tries every legal option, but after being stymied by the U.S. government in the name of diplomacy, David moves outside of the law -- and enters "a world of political intrigue, dangerous alliances and high emotional stakes."

Chris Black ("Star Trek: Enterprise") is writing the ABC Studios project.

ABC has also ordered a pilot for the dramedy "Murder in Manhattan." Written by Maria Maggenti ("Monte Carlo"), the hour-long project follows a mother and daughter who team up as amateur sleuths in New York City.

ABC Studios and DarkFire TV are producing.

(AP) ? A 15-year-old girl who had performed in President Barack Obama's inauguration festivities is the latest face on the ever-increasing homicide toll in the president's hometown, killed in a Chicago park as she talked with friends by a gunman who apparently was not even aiming at her.

Chicago police said Hadiya Pendleton was in a park about a mile from Obama's home in a South Side neighborhood Tuesday afternoon when a man opened fire on the group. Hadiya was shot in the back as she tried to escape.

The city's 42nd slaying is part of Chicago's bloodiest January in more than a decade, following on the heels of 2012, which ended with more than 500 homicides for the first time since 2008. It also comes at a time when Obama, spurred by the Connecticut elementary school massacre in December, is actively pushing for tougher gun laws.

Hadiya's father, Nathaniel Pendleton, spoke Wednesday at a Chicago police news conference, which was held in the same park where his daughter died.

"He took the light of my life," Pendleton said. He then spoke directly to the killer: "Look at yourself, just know that you took a bright person, an innocent person, a nonviolent person." Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy consoled him, the girl's mother and 10-year-old brother.

Hadiya was a bright kid who was killed just as she was "wondering about which lofty goal she wanted to achieve," her godfather, Damon Stewart, told The Associated Press. Hadiya had been a majorette with the King College Prep band.

"She was a very active kid, doing dance, cheerleading, who felt like she could accomplish just about anything, a very good student who had big dreams about what she wanted to be, a doctor, an attorney," said Stewart, a Chicago police officer and attorney. "She was constantly getting good grades."

Obama was asked about Hadiya's death in an interview with Telemundo, which led to a discussion about gun control. Also Wednesday, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday that the president and the first lady's "thoughts and prayers are with" the teen's family, adding: "And as the president has said, we will never be able to eradicate every act of evil in this country, but if we can save any one child's life, we have an obligation to try when it comes to the scourge of gun violence."

In Chicago, gangs routinely and often indiscriminately open fire. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and McCarthy are pushing for tougher local, state and national gun laws and longer prison sentences for offenders.

About three blocks from Hadiya's school, she and a group of 10-12 young people, including members of her volleyball team, had taken refuge under a canopy at a park to avoid the rain Tuesday afternoon. A man climbed a fence behind the park, ran at the group and started shooting, and then jumped back over the fence and into a white Nissan. The group scattered, but Hadiya was shot once in the back and a teenage boy was shot in the leg.

Police said Hadiya had no arrest record and there was no indication she was a member of a gang or was the gunman's target. In fact, McCarthy said there are no indications that anyone in the group was gang-affiliated. He said the police suspect that the gunman may be a member of a gang that considers the park its turf and that he mistook somebody in the group as someone from an encroaching rival gang.

McCarthy vowed to put a police officer at the park "24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year" if that is what it takes to show the gang that the park belongs to no one but the community.

Comments by both Stewart and the girl's father echo the message that city officials have long said: Gun violence is not confined to street corners in dangerous neighborhoods. Obama's neighborhood, Kenwood, is just north of the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry.

"Her parents had done everything right and she was doing everything right," he said. Stewart, who was 12 when his own brother was shot and killed, said his family and Pendleton's family were so close that his own children saw the 15-year-old as an older sister.

"The worst thing in the world was when yesterday I had to sit there and tell my children that their sister is gone," he said.

Israel hits Syria arms convoy to Lebanon ? sources

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Israeli forces attacked a convoy on the Syrian-Lebanese border on Wednesday, sources told Reuters, after Israelis warned their Lebanese enemy Hezbollah against using chaos in Syria to acquire anti-aircraft missiles or chemical weapons.

?The target was a truck loaded with weapons, heading from Syria to Lebanon,? said one Western diplomat, adding that the consignment seemed unlikely to have included chemical weapons.

A source among rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said an air strike around dawn (0430 GMT) blasted a convoy on a mountain track about 5 kilometres (3 miles) south of where the main Damascus-Beirut highway crosses the border. Its load probably included high-tech anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles.

?It attacked trucks carrying sophisticated weapons from the regime to Hezbollah,? the source said, adding that it took place inside Syria, though the border is poorly defined in the area.

A security official in the region also placed the attack on the Syrian side. A Lebanese security official denied any strike in Lebanon. It was not clear whether special forces took part.

The Israeli government declined comment on the issue.

Such a strike would fit its existing policy of pre-emptive covert and overt action to curb Iranian-backed Hezbollah and does not necessarily indicate a major escalation of the war in Syria. It does, however, indicate how the erosion of Assad?s family rule after 42 years is seen by Israel as posing a threat.

Some analysts suggested Hezbollah was moving its own arms caches from stores in Syria, fearing rebels would overrun them.

Though Israel this week echoed concerns in the United States about Syrian chemical weapons, officials say a more immediate worry is that the civil war could see weapons that are capable of denting its massive superiority in airpower and tanks from reaching Hezbollah; the group fought Israel in 2006 and remains a more pressing threat than its Syrian and Iranian sponsors.

Wednesday?s strike could have been a rapid response to an opportunity. But a stream of Israeli comment on Syria in recent days was a reminder of a standing policy of pre-emptive strikes and may have been intended to limit surprise in world capitals.

The head of the Israeli air force said only hours before the strike that his corps, which has an array of the latest jet bombers, attack helicopters and unmanned drones at its disposal, was involved in a covert ?campaign between wars?.

?This campaign is 24/7, 365 days a year,? Major-General Amir Eshel told a conference on Tuesday. ?We are taking action to reduce the immediate threats, to create better conditions in which we will be able to win the wars, when they happen.?

JETS OVER LEBANON

In Israel, where media operate under military censorship, broadcasters immediately relayed international reports of the strike. Channel Two television quoted what it called foreign sources saying the convoy was carrying anti-aircraft missiles.

In Lebanon, the army reported a heavy presence of Israeli jets over its territory throughout the night, following several days of increased incursions into Lebanese airspace. Israeli jets routinely fly and there have been unconfirmed reports in previous years of air strikes on Hezbollah arms shipments.

An Israeli attack inside Syria could be diplomatically provocative, particularly since Assad?s Iranian ally said on Saturday that it would view such a strike as an attack on itself. Israel views Iran as its principal enemy and is engaged in a bitter confrontation over Tehran?s nuclear programme.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is set for a new term after an election earlier this month, told his cabinet that both developments in Iran and turmoil in Arab states, notably Syria and Egypt, meant Israel must be strong.

?In the east, north and south, everything is in ferment, and we must be prepared, strong and determined in the face of all possible developments,? he said.

The Israeli military confirmed this week that it had lately deployed two batteries of its Iron Dome rocket-interceptor system to around the northern city of Haifa, which came under heavy Hezbollah missile fire during a brief war in 2006.

Israel?s refusal to comment on Wednesday is usual in such cases; it has, for example, never admitted a 2007 air strike on a suspected Syrian nuclear site despite U.S. confirmation of it.

By not confirming that raid, Israel may have ensured that Assad did not feel obliged to retaliate. For 40 years, Syria has offered little but bellicose words against Israel. A failing Assad administration, some Israelis fear, might be tempted into more action, while Syria?s Islamist rebels are also hostile to Israel and could present a threat if they seize heavier weapons.

Israeli Vice Premier Silvan Shalom said on Sunday that any sign that the Syrian army?s grip on its presumed chemical weapons stocks was slipping could trigger Israeli intervention.

But Israeli sources said on Tuesday that Syria?s advanced conventional weapons, much of it Russian-built hardware able to destroy Israeli planes and tanks, would represent as much of a threat to Israel as chemical arms in the wrong hands.

Interviewed on Wednesday, Shalom would not be drawn on whether Israeli forces had been in action in the north, instead describing the country as part of an international coalition seeking to stop spillover from Syria?s two-year-old insurgency.

Recalling that President Barack Obama had warned Assad of U.S. action if his forces use chemical weapons, Shalom told Israel Radio: ?The world, led by President Obama, who has said this more than once, is taking all possibilities into account.

?Any development ? in a negative direction would be something that needs stopping and prevention.?

LEBANON WAR

During the 2006 war in Lebanon, Israeli aircraft faced little threat, though its navy was taken aback when a missile hit a ship. Israeli tanks suffered losses to rockets, and commanders are concerned Hezbollah may get better weaponry.

In what might have been a sign of seeking to reassure major powers, Israeli media reported this week that the country?s national security adviser was despatched to Russia and military intelligence chief to the United States for consultations.

Shashank Joshi of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London saw any strike on Wednesday as intended to deliver a signal rather than heralding a major escalation from Israel.

?I think the Israelis are sending a message not just to Hezbollah, but also to Assad?s forces, that they have no wish to get dragged in, but chemical weapons and certain types of missiles are a red line for them, and that regime forces ought to signal, in turn, to Hezbollah that they should proceed with caution,? he said.

Worries about Syria and Hezbollah have sent Israelis lining up for government-issued gas masks. According to the Israel post office, which is handling distribution of the kits, demand roughly trebled this week.

?It looks like every kind of discourse on this or that security matter contributes to public vigilance,? its deputy director Haim Azaki told Israel?s Army Radio. ?We have really seen a very significant jump in demand.?

Microsoft Teams Up With Parature to Enhance Customer Service in ...

help

Yuri Arcurs / Shutterstock.com

It?s pretty much a given that any business function that exists these days is moving to the cloud. Tracking sales contacts and leads? Salesforce.com. Marketing? Marketo. Human resources? Workday. Running your business? Netsuite.

Even customer service has started a shift to the cloud, and a company that specializes in precisely that is Parature. I first encountered Parature in 2011. The basic idea with its cloud-based software is to reduce the cost and time commitment required to answer the same support questions over and over. Simple as that.

Well, building on a partnership first established two years ago, Parature is about to announce that it is teaming up with Microsoft, the maker of Dynamics CRM software.

The new integration will give Dynamics users a platform from which to engage with customers on the Web, via live chat session, on their mobile devices or through social networks.

Key features include a self-service part that creates a knowledge base customers can use to get quick answers to regular questions on their own. Repeated questions tend to eat up a lot of time and attention that could be better spent elsewhere.

There?s also a chat service, so your service agents can be right there in real time. And there?s a social component as well, including Parature for Facebook and support for Twitter. Yes, customer support happens there, too.

The point of the integration is to get customer data that lives in the CRM application all in the same place as records of support calls and help requests. Logical, right?

Anyway, Parature has come a long way since I last looked in on it. It has been used to support approximately 55 million end users worldwide, and its customers include IBM and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It?s backed by about $30 million in VC investments from Accel Partners, Valhalla Partners and Sierra Ventures.

Girl saves mom suffering diabetic attack

A fast thinking 9-year-old Illinois girl was able to help guide her mother to safety after the woman suffered a diabetic attack while driving at speeds of up to 70 mph.

Jennifer Sheridan, 42, was driving her daughter Aleksandra to McDonald's in Frankfort, Ill., after the two had attended a high school basketball game on the evening of Jan. 18. Sheridan, who has type 2 diabetes, had a diabetic attack when her blood sugar suddenly dropped. She told ABCNews.com that she was not aware of what was happening.

"I was still conscious, and talking, my daughter said. I don't remember any of that," Sheridan said. "We went through, she says, a red light, and then I know I kept saying, 'We have to stop.' That was in my mind, but it wasn't clicking."

Sheridan said that they passed her house and the McDonald's. Aleksandra was screaming and crying during the wayward drive, which she says must have lasted 15 to 20 minutes, but kept talking to her mother.

"She says she kept telling me different things, that I was going too fast, or too slow," Sheridan said.

While the car was still moving, Sheridan's husband called. She said that Aleksandra was on phone screaming that they were going off the road.

Her car eventually veered to the right, through a small ditch and a group of trees. At that point Aleksandra turned the car off, preventing the still moving car from hitting a tree.

Luckily, both mother and daughter were unharmed. Once the car was off, Aleksandra slowly fed her mother a chocolate bar that was in the car's cup holder.

"Once we were stopped and she could focus, she fed me," Sheridan said. "She said, 'I kept just giving little pieces so you wouldn't choke.'"

Police and the fire department were called to the scene by a passerby who saw the incident. The story also caught local media attention from WBBM-TV and Fox News.

Sheridan says the next thing she actually remembers was being in the ambulance. Police who arrived on the scene congratulated Aleksandra, and even gave her a yellow duck toy, which they call the "Golden Duck Award for Heroes."

This is not the first time Aleksandra has come to her mom's aid when she had a diabetic attack. Two years ago, while they were in their home, the girl called 911 when she found her mother on the kitchen floor.

Sheridan said that she is now using an insulin pump, which is designed to eliminate lows in blood sugar in diabetics. She said that she will soon be on the list for a new pancreas. With a daughter and a 16-year-old son with cerebral palsy, she says she needs to be in top form. For now, she's happy that both she and Aleksandra are unscathed.

"Every day, I wake up and think, 'Yes!'" she said.

FAO urges cash-strapped governments to keep up guard against bird flu

ROME (Reuters) - Governments must not allow financial constraints caused by the current global economic crisis to stop them keeping their guard up against avian flu, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said on Tuesday.

The agency, one of three international bodies that lead the global response to bird flu, warned of a repeat of the 2006 outbreaks, when the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus killed 79 people around the world and sparked fears of a pandemic.

Investment was vital to prevent a repeat of such a crisis, the FAO said.

"I am worried because in the current climate governments are unable to keep up their guard," FAO Chief Veterinary Officer Juan Lubroth said in a statement. "I see inaction in the face of very real threats to the health of animals and people."

Scientists fear avian flu, which is carried by water fowl and poultry and can be transmitted between birds, and from birds to people, could cause a catastrophe if it mutates to be able to spread between humans.

The virus has infected more than 600 people since it was first detected in Hong Kong in 1997 and is usually fatal. Bird deaths from the disease or culling cost economies $20 billion between 2003 and 2011, FAO said.

The UN agency, whose task is to coordinate the global response to outbreaks of avian flu in animals, said that while progress had been made in fighting the virus, outbreaks continue to occur in Asia and the Middle East.

The FAO also warned against a growing threat from Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious disease that can decimate flocks of sheep and goats, which is expanding in sub-Saharan Africa.

A vaccine against the disease is available but tight finances, a lack of political will and poor planning mean PPR continues to spread, the agency warned.

Downton Abbey, Season 3

Jessica Brown-Findlay as Lady Sybil in Series 2 of Downton Abbey. During World War I, Lady Sybil wore the same uniform and did the same work as all the other nurses

Photo courtesy of Carnival Film & Television Limited, copyright 2011 for Masterpiece

Killing off a character is the TV equivalent of serving fugu at a dinner party: It?s exciting at the time, but it?s probably a bad idea in the long run.

Lady Sybil Crawley was not only Downton Abbey?s kindest, most open-minded character. On a show that purports to chronicle the social forces transforming a Yorkshire village in the early 20th century, she was also the only person who did more than just talk about change. During World War I, she ignored her family?s objections and worked as a nurse?toiling the same hours and providing the same care as everyone else who wore the uniform. (Her sister Edith made herself popular with recuperating officers by writing letters and picking out books for them to read, but her contribution to the war effort was more ornamental than Sybil?s hard graft.)

Before the war, Sybil had attended political rallies, and after it she didn?t just shout slogans (or write letters to the editor); she renounced her own privilege and married a man who had once been a servant in her family home?a Catholic and an Irish nationalist to boot. They sailed off to Dublin, where they lived as Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Sybil Branson, with no domestic help and very little income. She was the least compromised, most principled person in the Crawleys? orbit?and ultimately that killed her.

Because while Sybil could make a modern marriage with Tom?one in which they loved, respected, and listened to one another?she couldn?t make her father overcome his own habits of privilege. That led Lord Grantham to ignore Tom?s pleas and Dr. Clarkson?s advice that they move Sybil to the hospital. Lord Grantham?s allegiance is to socially elevated men like Sir Philip Tapsell?chaps who socialize with earls and dukes and who dress for dinner without a quarrel?rather than to the village doctor or the former chauffeur. In the end, it all came down to money: ?Tom has not hired Sir Philip,? Lord Grantham told his family. ?He is not master here.?

And so the master sided with Sir Philip, who didn?t hesitate to make an impossible promise to the assembled crew, while Dr. Clarkson was honest enough to admit that he couldn?t guarantee a safe delivery for Sybil, even if they decamped to the hospital. (Perhaps he would have done so if his record as a diagnostician weren?t already hopelessly tainted by his declaration last season that Matthew would forever be incapable of movement below the waist.) Sadly, as we all now know, Sir Philip may be the aristocracy?s favorite ob-gyn, but he?s a terrible doctor, far too sure of himself and his status to listen to the warnings of a village physician, much less to pay attention to the symptoms of a mere patient.

Sybil?s death has stirred up the plot, driving a wedge between Cora and Robert, and opening up lots of questions about how and where Sybil and Tom?s daughter will be raised. But it?s also a depressing defeat for the possibility of social progress. Sybil died a painful death at age 24, after her father the earl overruled her commoner husband and sided with a doctor with a knighthood. On Downton Abbey, tradition always triumphs, but this loss is particularly painful.

Japan ex-China envoy: Tokyo erred on islands row

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's former envoy to China says his country erred in choosing to buy islands claimed by both Japan and China last fall, infuriating Beijing, and now both sides have no choice but to allow the issue to cool.

Uichiro Niwa, a former trading house executive who served as ambassador to Beijing from mid-2010 until late last year, told reporters on Monday that the purchase of the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea by Japan's central government was poorly timed and seemed driven by factors he could not explain.

"They may have had access to information that I didn't know," Niwa said at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan. "But from my personal point of view the timing was bad."

Niwa, the first private sector figure to be chosen as ambassador to China, found himself at odds with the Japanese government, especially after then-Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda pushed ahead with a plan to buy several of the islands from their private owner.

The purchase was apparently aimed at pre-empting a plan by outspoken Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara to not only buy the islands but develop them, but Beijing was outraged. The islands, known as the Diaoyu in China and the Senkakus in Japan, have been under Japanese control for decades, but Beijing says they have been Chinese territory for centuries. Taiwan also claims them.

The purchase prompted sometimes violent anti-Japanese protests in China and hammered exports to Japan's biggest overseas market.

"The Japanese government should have taken into account the possibility that this may have been a point of contention," Niwa said. At the very least, he said, Japan needed to provide "a better explanation to China and to the international community."

Niwa, whose former company Itochu Corp. has extensive interests in China, faced criticism from some in Japan for not being tough enough toward China regarding the disputed islands, which are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and a potential wealth of gas, oil and other undersea resources.

The first envoy named to replace Niwa, Shinichi Nishimiya, died before he could take up his position in Beijing, which was later filled by veteran diplomat Masato Kitera.

Apart from confrontations between Chinese and Japanese vessels near the islands, both sides have scrambled fighter jets to trail each other's planes, raising the risk of missteps that could lead to a clash.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who took office a month ago following a landslide parliamentary election victory by the Liberal Democratic Party, appears to be seeking to cool tensions.

Last week, a senior envoy conveyed a letter from Abe to Chinese leader Xi Jinping that struck a cordial tone and noted the two sides' "shared responsibility for peace and prosperity" in the region.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama arrived in China on Monday in the latest effort to use diplomatic backchannels to improve ties. Former prime minister Yukio Hatoyama also recently visited. Both senior leaders are considered friendly to China.

Niwa said that based on his many meetings with top communist party officials, he believed Beijing would not want the territorial tensions to veer into armed conflict.

But he said he believed the Chinese side viewed Tokyo's actions as a violation of an unstated agreement to avoid raising the dispute.

"There was a feeling on the Chinese side that Japan violated a relationship of trust," he said. Coming shortly after a meeting between Noda and Chinese President Hu Jintao, it was viewed in Beijing as an "insult."

"It is unfortunate the Japanese side misread the situation," he said.

Commenting on the ongoing dispute, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei on Monday emphasized the need for the sides to "overcome the prominent difficulty and work toward the strategic mutually beneficial relations between China and Japan."

However, Hong also expressed concern about a report that Japan was boosting defense spending, in part to deal with increased Chinese activity around the islands.

"We hope Japan can take the path of peaceful growth, respect the concerns of other countries in the region, learn from history and focus their efforts more on regional peace and stability," Hong said at a regularly scheduled press briefing.

Niwa said that regardless of why relations between China and Japan have deteriorated, given their close relations as neighbors and trading partners, both sides have no choice but to take a break and cool off.

"If we were a married couple, we could opt for a divorce, but we cannot," Niwa said. "There is simply no other choice."

Ice storm headed to Midwest overnight

CHICAGO (Reuters) - An ice storm was headed to parts of the Midwest later in the weekend and could create dangerous travel conditions in the region, a weather forecaster said on Saturday.

A warmer air mass was moving north and clashing with the cold front that has hovered over the region in recent days, creating freezing rain, ice and sleet, said Mark Paquette, meteorologist with AccuWeather.com.

"You don't need much ice to have major travel headaches," said Paquette.

The ice storm is expected to begin late on Saturday night in the St. Louis area and northern Missouri, southern and central Iowa and northern Nebraska.

By Sunday afternoon, the ice will spread to Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio, Detroit, Minneapolis and Madison and Milwaukee in Wisconsin.

By Monday the ice could move into the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the country.

Temperatures will be warmer than the frigid levels of recent days in most of the eastern two-thirds of the country, he said.

This winter has been unusually cold and with less snow than usual.

Three killed, many hurt at funerals in Egypt port city

CAIRO (Reuters) - Three people were shot dead and hundreds were injured in Egypt's Port Said on Sunday during the funerals of 33 protesters killed at the weekend, part of a wave of violence piling pressure on Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

State television said Mursi would address the nation later on Sunday. Forty-five people have been killed in demonstrations around the country since Thursday and his opponents have called for more protests on Monday.

Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters an 18-year-old man and two other people died from gunshot wounds on Sunday. More than 416 people suffered from teargas inhalation, while 17 were wounded by gunshots, he said.

As coffins were carried through the streets earlier, some in the crowd chanted for revenge or shouted anti-Mursi slogans. "Our soul and blood, we sacrifice to Port Said," they said.

Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents went on the rampage after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.

A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns. But it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.

In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens of stone-throwing protesters in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

The protesters accuse Mursi, elected in June with the support of his Muslim Brotherhood group, of betraying the democratic goals of the revolution. Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

The violence adds to the daunting task facing Mursi as he tries to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary election expected in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy.

It has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Mursi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader by undemocratic means.

Although Sunday's violence was less severe than the previous two days, Mursi may have little respite. The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.

The Popular Current, led by leftist Hamdeen Sabahy, said it "denounces the state of silence of the presidency and the government during the sad events that the country went through the past 48 hours".

"BLOOD BEING SPILT"

On a bridge close to Tahrir Square, youths hurled stones at police in riot gear who fired teargas to push them back towards the square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.

"None of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Mursi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Egypt's defense minister who also heads the army, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, called for the nation to stand together and said the military would not prevent peaceful protests. But he called on demonstrators to protect public property.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the regular escalations that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

CALL FOR DIALOGUE

The National Defence Council, headed by Mursi, called on Saturday for national dialogue to discuss political differences.

That offer has been cautiously welcomed by the opposition National Salvation Front. But the coalition has demanded a clear agenda and guarantees that any agreements will be implemented.

The Front, formed late last year when Mursi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote.

Egypt's transition has been blighted from the outset by political rows and turbulence on the streets that have driven investors out and kept many tourists away. Its currency, the pound, has steadily weakened against the dollar.

The Port Said clashes erupted after a judge sentenced 21 men to death for involvement in 74 deaths at a soccer match on February 1, 2012 between Cairo's Al Ahly club and the local al-Masri team. Many of the victims were fans of the visiting team.

There were 73 defendants in the case. Those not sentenced on Saturday will face a verdict on March 9, the judge said.

Al Ahly fans cheered the verdict after threatening action if the death penalty was not meted out. But Port Said residents were furious that people from their city were held responsible.

(AP) ? Greek workers have marched to parliament to protest upcoming pay cuts for transport workers and the government emergency decree that forced subway employees to end their strike.

The march Saturday by 2,000 members of the PAME union was peaceful.

On Friday, Greek riot police stormed the Athens subway depot to make sure that metro workers went back to work. The subway system had been shut down for nine days but running Friday afternoon. Bus workers have been striking since Thursday.

The debt-strapped Greek government wants to rip up subway workers' contracts and make their pay similar to other civil servants, which would mean pay cuts.

Transport unions are meeting later Saturday to decide on further action.

Genetic landscape of common brain tumors holds key to personalized treatment

Friday, January 25, 2013

Nearly the entire genetic landscape of the most common form of brain tumor can be explained by abnormalities in just five genes, an international team of researchers led by Yale School of Medicine scientists report online in the Jan. 24 edition of the journal Science. Knowledge of the genomic profile of the tumors and their location in the brain make it possible for the first time to develop personalized medical therapies for meningiomas, which currently are only managed surgically.

Meningioma tumors affect about 170,000 patients in the United States. They are usually benign but can turn malignant in about 10 percent of cases. Even non-cancerous tumors can require surgery if they affect the surrounding brain tissue and disrupt neurological functions.

Approximately half of the tumors have already been linked to a mutation or deletion of a gene called neurofibromin 2, or NF2. The origins of the rest of the meningiomas had remained a mystery.

The Yale team conducted genomic analyses of 300 meningiomas and found four new genetic suspects, each of which yields clues to the origins and treatment of the condition. Tumors mutated with each of these genes tend to be located in different areas of the brain, which can indicate how likely they are to become malignant.

"Combining knowledge of these mutations with the location of tumor growth has direct clinical relevance and opens the door for personalized therapies," said Murat Gunel, the Nixdorff-German Professor of Neurosurgery, professor of genetics and of neurobiology, and senior author of the study. Gunel is also a member of Yale Cancer Center's Genetics and Genomics Research Program.

For instance, two of the mutations identified ? SMO and AKT1 ? have been linked to various cancers. SMO mutations had previously been found in basal cell carcinoma and are the target of an already approved drug for that form of skin cancer. Another, KLF4, activates a suite of genes and is known for its role in inducing stem cell formation, even in cells that have fully differentiated into a specific tissue type. Mutations in a TRAF7, a gene not previously associated with cancer, were found in approximately one-fourth of tumors. Meningiomas with these mutations are found in the skull base and are unlikely to become cancerous. In contrast, NF2 mutant tumors that flank the brain's hemispheres are more likely to progress to malignancy, especially in males.

Doctors may be able to use targeted chemotherapy on patients with non-NF2 mutations, especially those with recurrent or invasive meningiomas and those who are surgically at high risk. Individualized chemotherapies could also spare patients irradiation treatment, a risk factor for progression of these generally benign tumors. Gunel said it may also be possible to extend these approaches to more malignant tumors.

Vine Swings To The Top Of Social In App Store, Claims 14th Spot In Free Apps

vinetopappVine was just released yesterday as Twitter's new standalone video-sharing iOS app. It lets users thread together tiny clips into one looping six-second video, with a UI very similar to Instagram's. The app expectedly made a splash with early adopters in the tech world and has seemed to gain momentum in the past 24 hours, becoming the top free app in the App Store's Social category. It's also risen to the number 14 top free app overall. The app was featured yesterday evening by Apple, which also helps the app climb the leader board. The real question, however, is whether or not Vine can keep its top placement in the App Store and continue to accrue downloads and new users.

Nearby lightning may be linked to migraines

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Weather has long been considered one of many potential migraine triggers, but a new study links lightning, specifically, to the onset of the severe headaches that plague more than 28 million Americans.

Based on headache logs and weather data for Ohio and Missouri, researchers found that people were 28 percent more likely to experience a migraine on days when lightning struck within 25 miles of their home.

"We're very surprised and very happy with the results in that this is the first study to link lightning to migraines," said Dr. Vincent Martin, the study's senior author from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio.

Migraines are severe headaches - sometimes accompanied by light sensitivity, visual hallucinations or nausea - that can disable a person for hours or even days at a time. The majority of migraine sufferers are women.

Martin told Reuters Health that a migraine may result from a person experiencing certain "triggers," such as stress, lack of sleep and dehydration.

Previous research has also found links between the onset of migraines and high barometric pressure, high temperatures and high humidity.

Most of the past studies looking at weather and migraines, however, relied on an individual's observations and did not always account for other, possibly unseen, local weather conditions, the researchers write in the journal Cephalalgia.

For the new study, they used information collected from three sensors that track lightning near Cincinnati, Ohio, and five sensors near St. Louis, Missouri. Those sensors allowed the researchers to know where and when lightning struck and the intensity of each strike.

They also used the headache diaries from two previous studies of 90 migraine sufferers in those areas who were between 18 and 65 years old. In those diaries, the participants recorded their headaches for three to six months.

After comparing the weather data with the headache journals, the researchers found that a lightning strike within 25 miles of a person's house was linked to a 31 percent increased risk of any kind of headache, and a 28 percent increased risk of the more severe migraine headache.

Martin said that could mean an extra one to three migraines per month for an individual, but he added that it depends on the person and the weather.

As for how lightning might affect migraine occurrences, Martin said it could be that the electromagnetic waves and ozone created by the lightning have something to do with it.

"The other theory is that when these thunderstorms roll in they can create more allergy spores in the environment," he said, which could create a problem for some people.

But the researchers cannot say for certain that lightning causes migraines, even though they used a computer model to account for other meteorological changes that occur during a thunderstorm.

In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Hayrunnisa Bolay of Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey, cautioned that the study had limitations, including its failure to account for the participants' own individual risk factors.

"In brief, one can only conclude that weather conditions associated with lightning have the potential to induce headache in migraine patients," she wrote.

White House Petition Demands Cellphone Unlocking Remain Legal

Stan Schroeder

A petition submitted to the White House demands the Librarian of Congress to rescind his recent decision which removed the unlocking of cellphones from the exceptions to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Due to the Librarian's decision, the unlocking of cellphones effectively becomes illegal in the U.S. on Jan. 26.

"As of January 26, consumers will no longer be able unlock their phones for use on a different network without carrier permission, even after their contract has expired," reads the petition. "Consumers will be forced to pay exorbitant roaming fees to make calls while traveling abroad. It reduces consumer choice, and decreases the resale value of devices that consumers have paid for in full."

Created by "S. K." from San Francisco, CA, the petition needs to reach 100,000 signatures before February 23 in order to get a response from the White House ? the White House recently raised the threshold from 25,000 signatures. At the time of this writing, 3,121 people have signed the petition.

"We ask that the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, and failing that, champion a bill that makes unlocking permanently legal," the petition text concludes.

Should unlocking of cell phones be legal or illegal? Share your thoughts in the comments.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Jim Caldwell enjoys his job as offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, and he's quite good at it.

Before taking over in early December Caldwell had never held the position at any level ? yet the Ravens' attack has flourished under his direction. Quarterback Joe Flacco has looked sharp, the play-calling has been unpredictable and Baltimore has scored 90 points in three playoff games to earn a berth in the Super Bowl.

Caldwell's success prompted head coach John Harbaugh to ask him to retain the post in 2013. Caldwell appreciates the opportunity, but has no intention of making "Offensive Coordinator, Baltimore Ravens" the last line on his resume.

The 58-year-old Caldwell wants to be a head coach. He did it in Indianapolis from 2009-11, and is itching for another crack at the top job in his profession.

"At some point in time, if the Lord wills it, I'd love to be able to do it again," Caldwell said Friday. "But it may not happen. Everybody in our profession is looking for an opportunity to run their own program, and I'm no different than anybody else in that regard."

Caldwell might have gotten the chance to at least interview for an opening if he wasn't so busy helping the Ravens earn a date with San Francisco in the Super Bowl next Sunday.

"I had a couple of GMs tell me, 'If it weren't for your guys' success in the playoffs and continuing to play, then he would have been someone we would have interviewed," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "Hopefully next year we're in the same spot, and it will be tough for him to get interviews again. Really, though, I can see him getting that opportunity a year from now."

Caldwell certainly is a viable candidate for a head coaching job. He took the Colts to the Super Bowl in 2009 and was instrumental in the development of quarterback Peyton Manning. He's also provided the Baltimore offense with a boost after replacing the fired Cam Cameron on Dec. 10.

Some coaches are fiery. Some break clipboards to get a player's attention. Caldwell does none of that.

"Man, he is so humble, laid back," Baltimore receiver Jacoby Jones said. "But he's a smart man. He reads a lot of books, gives you a lot of quotes. He's so diverse."

The NFL's Rooney Rule was designed to provide diversity among NFL head coaches and GMs, but if Caldwell ? an African American with impressive credentials ? can't get an interview, then maybe it's time to fix the process.

"I do think that it's something that certainly needs to be revisited, and is going to be revisited," Caldwell said. "I'm not one of the individuals that started that particular drive to do so. There's been a lot of very intelligent men that have looked at this thing and talked about it in depth, so I think that's going to happen.

In the meantime, Caldwell is preparing for the Super Bowl while dozens of other coaches are at home looking forward to next year. So, despite not getting an interview, he has no regrets.

"None whatsoever. I'd certainly rather be right where I am right now, with you asking me this question," he said. "It just doesn't happen that often in your career to be fortunate enough to have this opportunity. I'm thankful. The other things, they'll take care of themselves somewhere down the road."

Caldwell deserves plenty of credit for Baltimore's surprising run to the Super Bowl. In the six games since he's taken over, the Ravens have averaged 26.2 points and 406.2 yards of offense. During the playoffs, Baltimore has scored touchdowns on eight of 10 trips inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

"What coach Caldwell has done has kept the offense simple and basic," running back Ray Rice said. "He put the game into Joe Flacco's hands, and Joe has done a great job ? phenomenal job ? of leading us to where we needed to be. We are right here where we want to be right now."

And maybe, so is Caldwell. For now, anyway. He expressed genuine appreciation and thanks Friday when talking about being asked to return in 2013.

"I'm excited about it. Certainly very honored and humbled as well," he said. "It's a great opportunity for me, in particular working within this organization. I'm looking forward to it, but right now I'm looking forward to this next ball game we've got coming up. That's the most important thing."

Pope Benedict's message for the 47th World Communications Day ...

My comments in RED

My emphasis in BOLD

?Social Networks: portals of truth and faith; new spaces for evangelization.?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As the 2013 World Communications Day draws near, I would like to offer you some reflections on an increasingly important reality regarding the way in which people today communicate among themselves. I wish to consider the development of digital social networks which are helping to create a new ?agora?, an open public square in which people share ideas, information and opinions, and in which new relationships and forms of community can come into being.

These spaces, when engaged in a wise and balanced way, help to foster forms of dialogue and debate which, if conducted respectfully and with concern for privacy, responsibility and truthfulness, can reinforce the bonds of unity between individuals and effectively promote the harmony of the human family. The exchange of information can become true communication, links ripen into friendships, and connections facilitate communion. If the networks are called to realize this great potential, the people involved in them must make an effort to be authentic?[This authenticity has many aspects. It must be an authenticity based on the teachings of the Church, no on one's personal opinions. It must also be a lived truth, it is not enough to proclaim an idea. The "idea" or theology must become "flesh" in the lives of the believer who proclaims the message of Christ in this new medium.]?since, in these spaces, it is not only ideas and information that are shared, but ultimately our very selves.

The development of social networks calls for commitment [A scary word to many!]: people are engaged in building relationships and making friends, in looking for answers to their questions and being entertained, but also in finding intellectual stimulation and sharing knowledge and know-how. The networks are increasingly becoming part of the very fabric of society, inasmuch as they bring people together on the basis of these fundamental needs. Social networks are thus nourished by aspirations rooted in the human heart. [This is a two way communication. New media is not like reading a book, watching a television program or listening to a cd. It is a "communion". In a sense, we are going back to that public square, although virtual, but there is a, or should be a personal connection.]

The culture of social networks and the changes in the means and styles of communication pose demanding challenges to those who want to speak about truth and values. Often, as is also the case with other means of social communication, the significance and effectiveness of the various forms of expression appear to be determined more by their popularity than by their intrinsic importance and value. Popularity, for its part, is often linked to celebrity or to strategies of persuasion rather than to the logic of argumentation. At times the gentle voice of reason can be overwhelmed by the din of excessive information and it fails to attract attention which is given instead to those who express themselves in a more persuasive manner. The social media thus need the commitment of all who are conscious of the value of dialogue, reasoned debate and logical argumentation; [Don't be fooled into thinking you need to be some superstar to be part of the dialogue. This is a "one soul at a time" operation. We shouldn't look for fame, but to reach out to the PERSON. This was often said of Blessed John Paul. He saw the person before him as if they were the only person in the world] of people who strive to cultivate forms of discourse and expression which appeal to the noblest aspirations of those engaged in the communication process. Dialogue and debate can also flourish and grow when we converse with and take seriously people whose ideas are different from our own. ?Given the reality of cultural diversity, people need not only to accept the existence of the culture of others, but also to aspire to be enriched by it and to offer to it whatever they possess that is good, true and beautiful? [We are not alone in having something to offer. Even those with whom we disagree have something to offer us! I think we sometimes fail in this area, having an attitude that we are out to convert the pagans, who have nothing good to offer us. God speaks to us through all people and in all situations.] (Address at the Meeting with the World of Culture, B?lem, Lisbon, 12 May 2010).

The challenge facing social networks is how to be truly inclusive: thus they will benefit from the full participation of believers who desire to share the message of Jesus and the values of human dignity which his teaching promotes. Believers are increasingly aware that, unless the Good News is made known also in the digital world, it may be absent in the experience of many people for whom this existential space is important. The digital environment is not a parallel or purely virtual world, but is part of the daily experience of many people, especially the young. Social networks are the result of human interaction, but for their part they also reshape the dynamics of communication which builds relationships: a considered understanding of this environment is therefore the prerequisite for a significant presence there.

The ability to employ the new languages is required, not just to keep up with the times, but precisely in order to enable the infinite richness of the Gospel to find forms of expression capable of reaching the minds and hearts of all. [Many of the saints converted pagan practice, to shed light on the truths of the Gospel message. St. Patrick used pagan rituals to convert the pagans of his time.] In the digital environment the written word is often accompanied by images and sounds. Effective communication, as in the parables of Jesus, must involve the imagination and the affectivity of those we wish to invite to an encounter with the mystery of God?s love. Besides, we know that Christian tradition has always been rich in signs and symbols: I think for example of the Cross, icons, images of the Virgin Mary, Christmas cribs, stained-glass windows and pictures in our churches. A significant part of mankind?s artistic heritage has been created by artists and musicians who sought to express the truths of the faith.

In social networks, believers show their authenticity by sharing the profound source of their hope and joy: faith in the merciful and loving God revealed in Christ Jesus. [It is sharing what we love and makes us love Christ that gives the message authenticity, not only sharing some doctrine. How is the doctrine real in my "real" life?] This sharing consists not only in the explicit expression of their faith, but also in their witness, in the way in which they communicate ?choices, preferences and judgements that are fully consistent with the Gospel, even when it is not spoken of specifically? (Message for the 2011 World Communications Day). A particularly significant way of offering such witness will be through a willingness to give oneself to others by patiently and respectfully engaging their questions and their doubts as they advance in their search for the truth and the meaning of human existence. The growing dialogue in social networks about faith and belief confirms the importance and relevance of religion in public debate and in the life of society.

For those who have accepted the gift of faith with an open heart, the most radical response to mankind?s questions about love, truth and the meaning of life ? questions certainly not absent from social networks ? are found in the person of Jesus Christ. [The search for God is everywhere. We were created to "know, love and serve God" and are hard wired to seek Him out in our lives.] It is natural for those who have faith to desire to share it, respectfully and tactfully, with those they meet in the digital forum. Ultimately, however, if our efforts to share the Gospel bring forth good fruit, it is always because of the power of the word of God itself to touch hearts, prior to any of our own efforts. [We must always keep this in mind. I am a vessel of God. It is His work and not mine. Therefore, any fruit that comes from my work is His doing!] Trust in the power of God?s work must always be greater than any confidence we place in human means. In the digital environment, too, where it is easy for heated and divisive voices to be raised and where sensationalism can at times prevail, we are called to attentive discernment. Let us recall in this regard that Elijah recognized the voice of God not in the great and strong wind, not in the earthquake or the fire, but in ?a still, small voice? (1 Kg?19:11-12). We need to trust in the fact that the basic human desire to love and to be loved, and to find meaning and truth ? a desire which God himself has placed in the heart of every man and woman ? keeps our contemporaries ever open to what Blessed Cardinal Newman called the ?kindly light? of faith.

Social networks, as well as being a means of evangelization, can also be a factor in human development. As an example, in some geographical and cultural contexts where Christians feel isolated, social networks can reinforce their sense of real unity with the worldwide community of believers. [It is not only about sharing our faith, it is about developing "real" friendships. Caring for one another and supporting one another through prayer, kind words and listening. Being there for one another. We will need this more and more as our culture moves away from God and supports things that are alien to our faith.] The networks facilitate the sharing of spiritual and liturgical resources, helping people to pray with a greater sense of closeness to those who share the same faith. An authentic and interactive engagement with the questions and the doubts of those who are distant from the faith should make us feel the need to nourish, by prayer and reflection, our faith in the presence of God as well as our practical charity: ?If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal? (1 Cor?13:1).

In the digital world there are social networks which offer our contemporaries opportunities for prayer, meditation and sharing the word of God. But these networks can also open the door to other dimensions of faith. Many people are actually discovering, precisely thanks to a contact initially made online, the importance of direct encounters, experiences of community and even pilgrimage, [I have many exciting stories of meeting online friends for the first time. These are bonds that we all treasure and should continually nourish.] elements which are always important in the journey of faith. In our effort to make the Gospel present in the digital world, we can invite people to come together for prayer or liturgical celebrations in specific places such as churches and chapels. [Online is good, but we should, and often do have meet-ups for fellowship, prayer and education.] There should be no lack of coherence or unity in the expression of our faith and witness to the Gospel in whatever reality we are called to live, whether physical or digital. When we are present to others, in any way at all, we are called to make known the love of God to the furthest ends of the earth.

I pray that God?s Spirit will accompany you and enlighten you always, and I cordially impart my blessing to all of you, that you may be true heralds and witnesses of the Gospel. ?Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation? (Mk?16:15).
