It looks like shooting is becoming a customary way to square accounts in the heavily armed American society. As politicians and experts try to figure out what had caused a wave of violence that swept the country in recent years, the answer seems plain enough: nine in ten Americans possess arms. President Barack Obama has called for tighter gun laws and for studying the psychic effects of action-style video shooting games on youngsters. But the 33-year-old ex-policeman-turned-serial-killer who has made his gun a tool of revenge against society is well past his teens. Christopher Dorner, that?s the name of the sacked officer, has killed and wounded five of his colleagues. Judging by some evidence leaked out to the media, his motives are purely ideological and have to do with corruption and violence he ostensibly came across, while serving as a police officer.
Vilen Ivanov, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, thinks that a whole set of measures must be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
"People should stop associating possession of arms with the need to protect their rights. They should realize that their rights can be protected without arms. And that requires some effort. In addition, tighter regulations for gun buyers and, certainly, gun sale restrictions are necessary."
The Los Angeles killings are not the first instance of a sacked American taking vengeance on his employers and society. In 2007, Robert Hawkins shot dead eight people in Omaha after being fired from his job at a local McDonald?s restaurant. In 2010, a former driver of a beer distribution company killed as many people in the U.S. state of Kentucky after losing his job. The same year there were a few more such incidents with dozens of casualties. Last March, a sacked Florida teacher shot dead his former school principal and himself in broad daylight. And in September, a clerk killed several people in Minneapolis after being fired.
Clearly, something has to be done to change Americans? mentality and improve the?social climate.
