REPORT: Al Gore Made $100 Million In The ... - Business Insider

Amazing detail in Brian Stelter's reporting on the sale of Current TV to Al-Jazeera:

Al Jazeera did not disclose the purchase price, but people with direct knowledge of the deal pegged it at around $500 million, indicating a $100 million payout for Mr. Gore, who owned 20 percent of Current. Mr. Gore and his partners were eager to complete the deal by Dec. 31, lest it be subject to higher tax rates that took effect on Jan. 1, according to several people who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. But the deal was not signed until Wednesday.

That deal was announced last night, and within minutes, Time Warner had taken Current off the air, perhaps as a ploy to negotiate much higher carriage fees from Current's new wealthy parent company.

Web Marketing Tips For All Types Of Businesses - Maynas Eric

Web marketing is used by many to sell their services and products. Sales are created through Website marketing with the help of advertising and search engine optimization. If online marketing appeals to you, or you are already involved and just want to enhance your efforts, then the tips in this piece will help you.

If you are a good writer, try writing articles with your business information and submit them to magazines and websites that accept article submissions. Always add your website and business information in the ?about me? section of your article. Take the time to work with editors in order to increase your chances for publication.

Have a comment form available to consumers who choose not to purchase. They may offer helpful information you can use to increase sales. If you allow them to tell you what the issue was, you can focus your efforts more effectively.

TIP! Something you should consider when Internet marketing is that you should never spend all your money in one place. This concept is important in this type of venture because income is slow in the beginning and will not be steady until your business is well established.

Remember every detail when it comes to each page on your site. Every page on your site should share the same basic headline, including the site name and a little bit of information about it. Visitors are going to land on various pages of your site according to different searches that they do, and if they aren?t able to figure out your site, they usually leave immediately.

It is helpful to have a 500 error page that is user-friendly. Visitors will see this page when something goes haywire with your site?s automated database code. You do not want to let users see a generic page that just says the connection was timed out. You can let users know you?re aware of the problem and you are going to fix it.

When considering advertising your site, evaluate the different ways you can go about that. Some easy ways to share your site are to post on blogs, use social media, and put posters in businesses in your area. There are lots of ways to attract visitors to your site. You need to get creative.

TIP! If you have a robust internet marketing plan, you already know which products are your most profitable. Next, try using these products to think of new products that might generate a similar profit.

Sure, it sounds great to have a Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and 10 other profiles on 10 other sites, but each profile needs your full attention in order to keep it vibrant. Profiles that collect virtual dust are often considered spam.

Partnering with different-minded people can be mutually beneficial to both parties. Your partner and your can offer discounted bundles and lateral services to both your client bases.

One great way to make the most of Affiliate marketing is to pay attention to image searches. When a browser online searches some type of keyword, you will have a better chance of being found if you actually tag your images with the proper keywords. Even though it?s an image, it will still be indexed along with your site. You will find that more people will stop at your site and look around. This will make them more familiar with your company and they will return if they like it.

TIP! Place a chat box or open forum on your business website. This way, it will feel more like a club, or a group, rather than just a place that they can buy things.

Unique content that is useful and interesting will keep customers coming back to your website. E-books filled with tips or a humorous article or cartoon can also bring traffic to your site. You can set yourself and your business apart by being innovative and offering interesting content that will gain attention.

Have some promotions or events and see people flock to your site. A one-dollar sale is a great way to get people in your virtual door. Then when people check your website for the promotional options, there is a tendency for them to linger and check out other options as well. Some of them will probably buy a product or two.

Although, in general it is advisable to avoid mixing your business and personal life, this can be one of the exceptions. Instead of looking at the undertaking as a business, think of it more as a hobby that can earn you money. Do it together with your partner, and see how it goes.

TIP! A good website is essential to success in the realm of Internet marketing. Make sure you test the site often to fix bad links or bugs.

Review your business website from the perspective of a customer. Does it offer ease of use? Is reading it entertaining? Is the ordering process quick and effective? Using SEO techniques and struggling to attract more traffic will not get you anywhere if you do not offer quality content on your site.

Always offer freebies to visitors to your website, even if they consist of no more than a handy checklist or some good advice. Offer a screensaver or PDF file that can be downloaded from your website that contain helpful info that a customer may want to keep on hand about your product or service. For instance, if you are in the construction industry, you could offer an article or book on the changing code regulations in your area. People will perceive you as knowledgeable and helpful if you offer free quality content.

If you?re trying to gain more views on your website, and do better in search engine results, you have to provide unique and original content. This is even more important for retailers that are competing to sell the same items as many other retailers online. With your own original descriptions, peppered with choice keywords and manufacturer info, your site can really rise above the rest, even if you are all selling the same products.

TIP! On your site, have a banner with your mission statement or slogan. Using a banner will impart a professional look to your website and provide useful information about your product or service.

In conclusion, many businesses use Web marketing to sell products and services. Internet promotion uses methods such as search engine optimization and advertising to generate sales interest. If you remember the advice in this article, you can use Web marketing to seriously boost interest in your own products and services.

Taxiing plane clips parked jet at Fla. airport

18 hrs.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --?Authorities say no one was injured when two airplanes got into a sort of fender-bender at a Florida airport.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue says a taxiing Spirit Airlines Airbus A-320 clipped a US Airways Airbus A-320. The US Airways jet was parked Monday night in a remote area away from the gate at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Spirit spokeswoman Misty Pinson says a flight from Atlanta was taxiing to its gate when its left wing clipped the parked plane. Pinson says all 162 passengers on board got off at the gate as normal, and the plane returned to service.

Authorities say the US Airways aircraft was left with a gash in its tail section.

Firefighters were called to the scene, but there was no fuel leak from either aircraft. ?

For those short on time, aerobic, not resistance, exercise is best bet for weight- and fat loss

Jan. 2, 2013 ? A new study led by North Carolina researchers has found that when it comes to weight- and fat loss, aerobic training is better than resistance training. The study is believed to the largest randomized trial to directly compare changes in body composition induced by comparable amounts of time spent doing aerobic and resistant training, or both in combination, among previously inactive overweight or obese non-diabetic adults.

The study is entitled "Effects of aerobic and/or resistance training on body mass and fat mass in overweight or obese adults". It is published in the December 2012 edition of the Journal of Applied Physiology published by the American Physiological Society.

Methodology

A total of 234 previously sedentary overweight or obese males and females, age 18-70 years of age, were enrolled in one of three eight-month supervised protocols: aerobic training (AT), resistance training (RT), or a combination (AT/RT). Of the total, 119 participants completed the trials and had complete data for the variables of interest in the article.

Those assigned to aerobic training exercised vigorously, at about 70-85% of maximum heart rate. They exercise approximately 45 minutes three days per week throughout the study period.

Individuals assigned to resistance training also exercised three days a week, completing three sets of 8-12 reps on eight resistance machines that targeted all major muscle groups. Resistance was increased throughout the study to maintain a steady level of challenge as the participants gained strength.

Individuals who were assigned to AT/RT performed all the exercises assigned to both AT and RT groups. At the end of study each enrollee was assessed for weight, body composition, waist circumference, cardiopulmonary fitness and strength compared to their baseline.

Key Findings and Conclusions

The researchers found:

? The groups assigned to aerobic training and aerobic plus resistance training lost more weight than those that did resistance training only. In fact, those who did resistance training only actually gained weight due to an increase in lean body mass.

? Fat mass and waist circumference significantly decreased in the AT and AT/RT groups, but were not altered in RT. However, measures of lean body mass significantly increased in RT and AT/RT, but not in AT. The finding suggest that aerobic exercise is more effective in reducing these measures.

? Lean body mass increased with both RT and AT/RT, but not AT. Having the benefit to of both modes of exercise allowed AT/RT to decrease body fat percent significantly more than either AT or RT due to decreased fat mass combined with increased lean body mass.

Importance of the Findings

According to Leslie H. Willis, an exercise physiologist at Duke University Medical Center and the study's lead author, "Given our observations, it may be time to seriously reconsider the conventional wisdom that resistance training alone can lead to weight and fat loss."

Willis added, "If increasing muscle mass and strength is a goal, then resistance training is required. However, the majority of Americans could experience health benefits due to weight and fat loss. The best option in that case, given limited time for exercise, is to focus on aerobic training. When you lose fat, it is likely you are losing visceral fat, which is known to be associated with cardiovascular and other health benefits."

In addition to Leslie Willis, the study was conducted by Cris A. Slentz, Lori A. Bateman, Lucy W. Piner, Connie W. Bales and William E. Kraus of the Duke University Medical Center; and Joseph A Hourmard and A. Tamlyn Shields of East Carolina University.

New insights into how plants grow in response to light, water and gravity

Jan. 2, 2013 ? Elementary school students often learn that plants grow toward the light. This seems straightforward, but in reality, the genes and pathways that allow plants to grow and move in response to their environment are not fully understood. Leading plant scientists explore one of the most fundamental processes in plant biology -- plant movement in response to light, water, and gravity -- in a January Special Issue of the American Journal of Botany.

Plant movements, known as tropisms, are crucial for plant survival from the second a plant germinates to how a plant positions its flowers for pollinators and seed dispersal. "They are basic processes that underlie all of plant physiology and growth," says Sarah Wyatt, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology at Ohio University. Plants adapt and acclimate to their surroundings using tropisms, including moving in response to light (phototropism), water (hydrotropism), and gravity (gravitropism).

To inspire cutting-edge research on plant tropisms, Sarah Wyatt and plant biologist John Kiss, Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Mississippi, co-edited the special issue and invited plants scientists worldwide to write 24 articles that advance and summarize the field. "Tremendous progress has been made in the field of tropism research in the past decade," comments Kiss. "This issue was an opportunity to bring the community together," adds Wyatt, "and highlight some truly incredible science that has been ongoing 'under the radar' if you will and often under difficult circumstances."

Research in outer space is just one difficult circumstance by which scientists study how plants move. Growing plants in space has become a reality. "The International Space Station is now complete and the U.S. is committed to its utilization until at least 2020," Kiss says. Food and replenishing breathing air are vital functions plants can play on the ISS, and space flight experiments help scientists understand basic mechanisms plants use to grow and move because of gravity, or lack thereof.

Back on Earth, work on gravity and other tropisms is important for understanding plant growth, development, and responses to changing climates. Basic tropistic mechanisms in response to water and light could also enhance agricultural practices, explains Kiss, since crop plants experience environmental stressors like drought and overcrowding.

Tropisms have captured the interest of scientists for centuries. The way plants move can appear so eerily human that in the late 1700s and early 1800s, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, Charles Darwin's grandfather, predicted that plants have multiple brains that can communicate with muscles to tell plants how to grow.

From Erasmus and Charles Darwin to modern-day scientists and techniques, the biology of plant tropisms has come a long way. Some of the special issue articles review the history of plant tropisms to the present day, whereas others move the field forward through new research. New genetic and molecular tools, for example, are used to shed light on the mechanisms plants employ to respond to water and gravity. Many articles focus on the famous model organism in plant science, Arabidopsis thaliana. Other articles on gravitropism include work on cereal grasses important for agriculture as well as the aquatic-dwelling fern Ceratopteris richardii.

The issue kicks off with a broad review article about how roots revolve and bend, known as circumnutation. Vines that wrap around objects as thin as wooden stakes or as thick as tree trunks all use circumnutation to climb. Research on circumnutation in stems is common, points out Dr. Fernando Migliaccio of the Institute of Agro-Environmental and Forest Biology in Italy. But as in all plant sciences, rigorous work about what goes on below the surface of the soil is scarce, even though root behavior below ground could be essential for understanding how plants establish and survive in agricultural and natural settings.

Time-lapse photography has popularized the most famous tropism -- phototropism, or how plants move toward light. Phototropism may be the most well-studied tropism, but one relatively unexplored area of phototropism is how plants grow and move in green light, as studied by graduate student Yihai Wang and his advisor Kevin Folta at the University of Florida. Light becomes greener when it passes through nearby plants. A plant growing in a shady spot under a tree receives less sunlight, and it also receives different wavelengths of light that change its growth patterns. Scenarios like this happen every day in the natural world, explain Wang and Folta. "Oftentimes a plant cannot possibly compete by out-growing or over-reaching a neighbor, and it must adopt a new program of acclimation," they say. Wang and Folta explore new findings about how plant species use gene expression and physiology to cope and survive in green-enriched environments.

The special issue continues with articles tackling how gravitropism works. Recent discoveries of plant hormones and the proteins that transport them have reinvigorated scientists to investigate the pathways plants use to perceive gravity. Original research in this special issue begins to "untangle the complex interactions" of plant growth regulators like plant hormones, proteins, and organic compounds, explain Wyatt and Kiss.

Wyatt and Kiss hope to inspire young scientists to conduct research on the fundamental field of plant tropisms on Earth and in space. "Remember the seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why," quotes Wyatt of Robert Fulghum's All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. "This is the wonderment that is inherent in tropistic responses -- tropisms capture the imagination."

[Windows] Keep your computer running clean with the all-in-one ...

Wise Care 365When you do as much work on the PC as I do, you worry about keeping it clean and running right. That is why I love to find new cleaning utilities. Of course, all-in-one cleaning utilities are about a dime a dozen these days, so I didn't have much hope for Wise Care 365. After running it, though, I was pretty impressed with the results I got.

WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT DO

Main Functionality

Wise Care 365 is an all-in-one cleaning utility that you can use to keep your PC healthy. It helps you by running the following services: PC Checkup, System Tune-up, Privacy Protector and Wise Utilities. All of these features can be used to help keep your computer in great working order. The program is now also compatible with Windows 8.

Pros

  • Both a Pro and Free version available
  • Comes with a Disk Cleaner and a Registry Cleaner
  • Program does all the work for you. This allows you to keep your computer running great with just a few clicks.
  • Extremely fast scanning speed when compared to similar utilities
  • Comes with the following utilities: Privacy Eraser, Registry Defrag, Disk Defrag, Startup Manager, Advanced Cleaner, System Slimmer, File Shredder, Password Generator, Registry Cleaner, Game Booster, Program Uninstaller, Memory Optimizer, Auto Shutdown, Data Recovery, Folder Hider, JetSearch, and Disk Eraser.

Cons

  • The official site sends you to CNET to download (however, you are not forced to use the CNET downloader)
  • Free version does not have privacy cleaning module or the ability to automatically update in the background

Discussion

Wise Care 365 ScreenshotI'll start off by saying that Wise Care 365 is a great program as far as all-in-one utilities are concerned. It preforms operations fast, and you have a lot of helpful tools to use. Of course, I may just feel this way because the program helped me free up over 2GB of space. That is a pretty good amount considering the fact that I ran a different cleaning program just before running this one. Thus, the program got off to a great start.

Now, there are two versions of this program available. There is the Free one and the Pro one. For most users, the Free version will be just fine. However, there are a few extra features that the Pro program comes with. Before we get into the extras that come with the Pro version, let's talk about the features available in both versions.

Regardless of which version you download, you will have access to the following features: Registry Defrag, Disk Defrag, Startup Manager, Advanced Cleaner, System Slimmer, File Shredder, Password Generator, Registry Cleaner, Game Booster, Program Uninstaller (yes, it tries to cleanup "leftover" traces of programs), Memory Optimizer, Auto Shutdown, Data Recovery, Folder Hider, JetSearch, and Disk Eraser. All of these are fully functional, even in the Free version. If you upgrade to Pro, you get to enjoy these added benefits: Auto Updates in the Background, Fixes Privacy Issues found during System Check Up (Free version will list privacy issues but does not fix them), and you can also use the Privacy Eraser.

The Free version also comes with a few different skins you can use. The Pro version offers more, but this is not really a feature worth upgrading for. If you are going to shell out the money for the Pro version, it is more than likely going to be for the ability to fix your privacy issues. I guess, however, the extra skins are a nice bonus.

CONCLUSION AND DOWNLOAD LINK

Overall, I highly recommend giving this program a try. Regardless if you use the Free version or you buy the Pro, this program will offer you some kind of benefit. At the very least, you can download the Free version to see if you like it. The official site takes to your CNET to download the program, but you do not have to deal with the crappy CNET Downloader. Once you click download, you will just get the Wise Care 365 installer.

If you don't want to upgrade to the Pro version but still want to be able to clean privacy traces, there are plenty of freeware tools similar to Wise Care 365. The first one that comes to mind is CCleaner, an excellent free program that is the industry standard when it comes to cleaning privacy traces. Others include Toolwiz Care, Glary Utilities, WinUtilities Free, Advanced SystemCare, Puran Utilities, and much more.

Armed robbers steal from Apple store in Paris

By The Associated Press

PARIS --?Masked and armed robbers used the New Year's Eve revelry as cover to rob the flagship Apple store in Paris.

The French press reported that up to ?1 million ($1.3 million) in goods were stolen at the store behind the Paris Opera house, a figure police would not immediately confirm.

Police said Tuesday the robbery occurred about 9 p.m. Monday, three hours after closing, while police were deployed around the famed Champs-Elysees Avenue where revelers traditionally gather on New Year's Eve.

Christophe Crepin of the Unsa police union said the "well prepared" operation was carried out by four masked and armed individuals.
